Jesus calls His followers to live differently by being people whose words can be trusted, who refuse to repay evil with evil, and who choose love even when it is undeserved. Rather than fighting every battle, defending every personal right, or seeking revenge when we are wronged, Jesus teaches us to respond with restraint, generosity, and grace. Loving our enemies does not mean ignoring harm or having warm feelings toward those who hurt us, but choosing to seek their good instead of returning hatred for hatred. This kind of love does not come naturally, but as we surrender to Jesus, the Holy Spirit changes us from the inside out so that our lives increasingly reflect the character of our Father.
